5 Tips To Overcome Postpartum Depression

If you’re a new mom and you’re experiencing some blue mood and not feeling sure about yourself, then you may be suffering from postpartum baby blues which commonly include mood swings, anxiety, crying spells and difficulty in sleeping.

According to Mayo Clinic, baby blues typically begin with the first to three days after delivery, and may last up to two weeks. But some women may experience a more long-lasting form of depression, called postpartum depression. If you feel depressed or have clouded thinking, then it might be better to get medical help. The sooner you get medical treatment, the more you can manage your symptoms and enjoy with your baby. Here are some tips to overcome postpartum depression.

1. Have A Good Cry!

You may have seen in magazines some rosy picture about mothers having a lovely time with their bundle of joy. Though every word rings true, you should not forget that in reality little babies need oodles of care. To be on the practical side, this may wear out and stress the mother. Plus the hormones play a havoc during childbirth, so naturally if you feel like crying, have a heartfelt cry. Your body will be working to get back to normal. The additional hormones can be flushed out through your tears.

2. Get Enough Rest

Proper rest helps the body to rejuvenate and work at its optimum best. When you sleep, the body repairs itself and gets over the adverse effects of depression. Sleep relaxes your brain and calms your mind. So get all the help you can in looking after your young one and take the much needed rest. Put a family member or partner on baby duty and have some ‘me’ time. If you can’t find anyone to help you, just be smart and nap while your baby is sleeping.

3. Meet Other Moms

If you’re suffering from postpartum depression, you may feel lonely. Most of your time will be spent taking care of your little one. Try going out and join any new mom’s group either nearby your home or on Facebook. You are sure to find people in the similar situation as yours over there. You can share your experiences with them and relate to the the pack.

4. Eat Healthily And Don’t Forget To Exercise

Healthy foods boost your nutritional status and wards off the tiredness. If you’re breastfeeding your baby, then it becomes all the more important to eat the right foods. Exercising helps you to get fit and boosts blood flow to your brain. Research studies have shown that exercising increases positive emotions and fights off negative feelings and depression. Several YouTube videos teach you how to exercise. You can workout while watching these training videos.

5. See A Professional

Seeking professional help is the best antidote for your problem. Your family members may have a hard time understanding your feelings, but an occupational therapist can guide you to recovery. Doctors may treat you for your depression, and you can be your charming self very soon. The sooner you get medical help, the better it is for you and your baby.

Realize you’re going through a difficult time and don’t be hard on yourself. It’s just a phase of life. With proper medical attention and a bit of TLC you can enjoy your baby, feel confident and make the most of this precious period of your life.
